11/4/2014Dana Foundation wins Silver Davey AwardAmerican Technology Services, Inc. (ATS®) announced today that its client, the Dana Foundation, was selected out of over 4,000 entries to receive a Silver Davey Award for its outstanding website redesign. The Davey Awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of Visual Arts (IAVA) and honors the finest creative work from the best firms, agencies, and companies around the world.

The Dana Foundation is a private philanthropic organization that supports brain research through grants, publications, and educational programs, using multiple channels including publications, website, and social media.

In late 2012, the Foundation embarked on a strategic plan to update and redesign its public facing website: Dana.org. It chose ATS to lead the effort due to its reputation of building award-winning and user-friendly nonprofit websites. ATS’ strong focus on usability, delivering effective backend systems, and deep expertise with the Ektron content management system (CMS) were major factors in winning the work. The goal of the project was to make the Foundation’s website mobile-accessible, search-friendly, and align the look and feel with current standards and best practices.

The ATS web design and development team worked closely with the Foundation stakeholders to:

  • Deliver a complete facelift to the website and enable mobile-friendly features;

  • Develop a centralized management system for all website-related operations – including the Foundation’s Brain Awareness Week operations;

  • Upgrade to the latest version of the Ektron CMS and migrate content and functionality from multiple systems into it for a centralized storage, management, and maintenance solution;

  • Conduct usability testing and ensure the information architecture is easy to use;

  • Develop an audience matrix and audience-based navigation to guide visitors to the information they’re looking for; and

  • Integrate a social media sharing solution for optimized content sharing.

The website redesign was successfully completed in January of 2014 and the results are striking:

  • A clean, modern look that effectively promotes the Foundation’s image and online presence;

  • A mobile-friendly site that allows users to access information from any mobile devices;

  • Simplified website management through a consolidated and centralized CMS; and

  • Increased site speed, simplified search, and a friendly user interface.

“Our efforts to fund, share, and advance worldwide neuroscience research are greatly supported by online media, specifically, our website and social media channels,” said James Rutt, IT director. “ATS brought the right technical expertise, design skills and CMS knowledge to deliver an outstanding website. We are thrilled with winning the Davey Award.”

Adam Hostetter, who leads ATS’ Design and Development practice, noted “Working with the Dana Foundation has been a rewarding experience for the ATS team.  We were able to deliver a consolidated, optimized, and effective website. Winning the Davey award is a bonus.”

ATS continues to work with the Foundation to monitor site performance and provides support for on-going maintenance. The ATS team plans to work closely with the Foundation staff to keep them up-to-date with new software updates, latest trends, security considerations, and improved approaches to serve the Foundation’s online audience in the coming years.
